Before Brittany Bowe became an Olympian, her parents let her be a multi-sport kid.

At 5:30 PM, basketball practice ended.

At 7 PM, Brittany was back at practice, on skates this time.

She played basketball for her school and competed in inline speed skating for a national team, doing both throughout all four years of high school.

There wasn’t even an ice rink within 90 miles of her town.

Her dad, Mike, had coached high school basketball for 30 years. When Brittany got to high school, he quit his job so he could finally sit in the stands and watch his daughter play.

The school hired him back within a week.

He ended up coaching her himself, every season, all four years.

Her mom, Debbie, didn’t even understand the sport Brittany loved most. She admitted, “I really had no idea what she was doing.”

She sat in the corner of arenas anyway.

Every regional. Every meet. For years.

Neither parent asked Brittany to choose. They simply kept showing up for both.

Eventually, Brittany traded basketball and inline skating for one sport: speed skating on ice.

Four Olympic Games later, she had two Olympic bronze medals.

Sometimes supporting a young athlete isn’t about helping them pick a lane.
