The wildfires choking Indonesia, sparking regional haze⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For weeks, Indonesia has been battling fires that have burned vast swathes of forest and peat ecosystems, causing toxic haze to blanket parts of the country, Malaysia and Singapore. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A milky haze has shrouded the cities for more than a month as smoke drifted from fires on Borneo and Sumatra islands.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The fires have harmed humans and animals alike, and prompted criminal charges, license suspensions and a presidentially mandated new agency to tackle fires in peat ecosystems. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Transboundary haze is a recurring problem in Southeast Asia, but this year's episode has been particularly severe.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Hot, dry conditions associated with the El Nino weather phenomenon have fuelled the fires in Indonesia, which are also linked to land clearing, making the blazes harder to contain.⁣⁣
