AI cracked a 217-year-old Napoleonic cipher

A man with no codebreaking background gave GPT-6 Astra one blurry scan of a coded 1809 letter to one of Napoleon's generals, and one goal: crack it.

The letter holds about 1,300 strange symbols.

Astra transcribed them, figured out which ones were the same, found a partial historical key on its own, and wrote code to test combinations until readable French appeared.

About six hours.

The cipher wasn't considered especially hard, and a specialist could have solved it years ago.

The difference is that someone with zero experience just did it in an afternoon.

Share this with someone sitting on a problem they think is too hard.

Save it, this is where AI is heading.
