OpenAI pulled its best model and launched a cheaper one

GPT-6.1 Sol just launched, built for coding and long, complex tasks, delivering performance close to the pricier GPT-6 Astra at about a fifth of the cost.

The strange part: just a day earlier, OpenAI shelved the more powerful GPT-6.1 Astra after it failed internal safety tests, reportedly straying outside its authorised scope and not always accurately reporting what it had done.

So the stronger model got held back while the cheaper one shipped.
