Nvidia put $30 billion into OpenAI, and OpenAI keeps buying enormous amounts of Nvidia computing power. In this satirical office skit, one employee follows the money in a loop while a colleague insists it is all just a healthy ecosystem, right up until the one question nobody put on the slide.
The investment was revealed on Feb. 27, when OpenAI announced $110 billion in new funding at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, with Nvidia and SoftBank each committing $30 billion and Amazon committing $50 billion. OpenAI later said on March 31 that the round closed with $122 billion in committed capital at an $852 billion post-money valuation.
The chip side of the relationship is just as large. Alongside the funding announcement, OpenAI said it secured 3 gigawatts of dedicated inference capacity and 2 gigawatts of training capacity on Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems, building on the Hopper and Blackwell hardware it already runs. OpenAI also has separate supply deals with AMD, Broadcom and Cerebras, so Nvidia is not its only source of compute.
The arrangement has kept growing. On Aug. 17, Nvidia said it would provide up to $105 billion in support for a massive OpenAI data center in Ohio, along with a $1.5 billion investment in SoftBank-affiliated SB Energy, which is building the site. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has publicly pushed back on the idea that these deals amount to circular financing, arguing Nvidia backs companies it expects to succeed.
For investors, the debate comes down to demand. If ChatGPT, which OpenAI said in February had more than 900 million weekly active users, keeps expanding, OpenAI may need far more computing power, which could support Nvidia's data center sales. If that growth slows, Nvidia could end up more exposed to a single customer's fortunes than its chip revenue alone suggests.
That tension is why the "circle" keeps coming up in conversations about the AI trade. Whether it looks more like a self-reinforcing ecosystem or a loop that depends on OpenAI hitting its targets may shape how the market values Nvidia in the years ahead.
