What happens when the world's most popular AI chatbot starts selling ad space? This comedy skit imagines the pitch meeting, where a skeptical employee pushes back on putting ads in ChatGPT and the monetization lead insists everything is relevant, labeled and under control, right up until a "Sponsored" sticker lands on a cup of coffee.
The joke sits on top of a real business. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. on Feb. 9, 2026, for logged-in adults on its Free and Go tiers. The company says ads can appear below the end of a response, carry a sponsored label and stay visually apart from the answer itself. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free, and users identified as under 18 do not see ads.
The money is real, too. On Aug. 31, OpenAI said its ad business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch, with tens of thousands of advertisers using the platform. When it added Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan on Sept. 23, the company said ChatGPT Ads were running in more than 60 countries.
The skit's question about rival AI companies is not as far-fetched as it sounds. OpenAI's ad policies already block or limit whole categories, including political content, gambling, alcohol and tobacco, while health, financial and legal services are open only to approved U.S. advertisers. A September 2026 revision to those policies spells out that OpenAI can turn down ads that conflict with its business interests or competitive position.
The ad formats are evolving as well. On Sept. 16, OpenAI said it was testing Sponsored Agents, which let people start a conversation with a business-sponsored AI agent after clicking an ad. Rival Anthropic took the opposite approach, using its first Super Bowl campaign in February to promise that its Claude chatbot would stay free of ads.
For investors, a growing ChatGPT ad business could put OpenAI in more direct competition for digital ad budgets with Alphabet's Google and Meta Platforms, while Microsoft, a major OpenAI backer, has its own interest in how AI-powered search gets monetized. As for the coffee, Folgers has not signed on. That part is just the punchline.
