Tesla now has a factory built entirely around the Semi, but a 50,000-truck capacity figure isn't the same as 50,000 trucks on the road.
On the evening of Thursday, September 24, 2026, Tesla opened its dedicated Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, next to Gigafactory Nevada, and called it the launch of high-volume production. Elon Musk wasn't there in person. He appeared in a prerecorded video and called the Semi a "breakthrough product for heavy shipping." Tesla says the 1.8 million square foot plant is designed for 50,000 trucks a year, or about 1,000 a week at full rate, and builds the Standard, Long Range, and European-spec versions on one line. The first truck actually came off the high-volume line on April 29, 2026. Tesla hasn't said how many trucks it's building right now or when it expects to reach full capacity.
The production Semi is a big redesign. Tesla swapped the purchased 2170 battery cells in earlier trucks for its own 4680 cells, which it says means less battery mass with no loss of range. The motor now uses a steel-caged rotor in place of a carbon-fiber sleeve and a bar-wound stator shared with Cybertruck. Tesla calls the Semi the first heavy-duty truck with electric steering, which does away with hydraulic pumps and fluids. A "Megamanifold" heat pump handles cabin and powertrain heating and cooling. Tesla also says it stamps parts and builds the batteries, drive axles, cooling modules, and even the seats in-house, while "most truck plants just assemble."
Tesla rates the Standard Range Semi at 325 miles and the Long Range at 500 miles at a full 82,000-pound gross weight, using about 1.7 kWh per mile. It says its Semi fleet has run at better than 98% uptime so far in 2026, against the 90% to 95% it cites for diesel Class 8 trucks. It also says a Megacharger can restore up to 60% of range in about 30 minutes. These are Tesla's own numbers and haven't been independently audited.
For investors, it all comes down to demand. Tesla named PepsiCo, DHL, US Foods, ABF Freight, WattEV, Einride, and IMC Logistics as customers. Einride announced a 500-truck order in August. In the days before the launch, IMC ordered 50 trucks and the ZET SCALE shipper coalition chose Tesla as its primary supplier for an initial 2,500-truck order. Tesla hasn't released total orders or official pricing. Earlier reports put the Long Range Semi at roughly $290,000, well above the $180,000 Tesla advertised when it unveiled the truck in 2017. At that 2017 reveal, Tesla said production would start in 2019. Tesla also says it will use Semis to haul its own freight. Video Contains content from X user: @tesla_semi.
