Now showing at posterhousenyc — “Designed to Be Red: Native American & Indigenous Poster Works”.

Mythmakers and marketing teams have long used graphic design to tell stories ABOUT Native peoples rather than WITH them. Designed to Be Red is the first major exhibition in this country to treat the poster as a central medium of Native and Indigenous graphic expression, defying colonialist narratives and proving that Indigenous design has always been critical to our visual history.

From extractive marketing that cast Indigenous people as tokens to iconic protest works, this exhibition seeks to teach viewers that Native Americans are still here, still designing—in fact, they’ve been designers since pre-contact.

These posters are not relics. They are design: sovereign, persistent, ongoing. They were made to be seen.

The exhibition runs through February 21, 2027 in New York City.
