Dorthy Shore felt healthy, active, and completely normal. She had no cough, no pain, and no symptoms that suggested lung cancer. Then an examination prompted by an unrelated heart-health conversation revealed a suspicious 3.1-centimeter mass in her lung.

In this deeply personal episode of Crazy Good Ageing, Dorthy sits down with her co-host and friend Valerie Freeman to share the beginning of her lung cancer journey: the unexpected phone call, the first biopsy that came back negative, the decision to keep searching for answers, and the second biopsy that finally found the cancer.

Dorthy also discusses the importance of advocating for yourself, seeking additional medical opinions, and not assuming that feeling healthy means nothing is happening inside your body.
This is Part 1 of Dorthy’s cancer journey and was recorded before her lung surgery.

In the episodes that follow, she shares what she learned from consulting specialists at Memorial Sloan Kettering, MD Anderson and UT Southwestern—and what happened during her surgery and recovery.

In this episode:
- How an unrelated medical conversation led to Dorthy’s lung scan
- Why she initially wasn’t alarmed by the suspicious mass
- What happened when her first biopsy came back negative
- Why her doctors continued looking for an answer
- How a second biopsy finally detected lung cancer
- Why Dorthy sought multiple medical opinions
- The role faith played in managing fear and uncertainty
- Her advice for anyone who receives a suspicious scan

Dorthy’s message: Don’t move slowly. Ask questions, advocate for yourself, and keep looking for answers when something remains unexplained. A cancer diagnosis is frightening, but it is not automatically a death sentence.
