Kobe grew up in Italy, in the gym, watching his father play professional basketball. But the NBA was an ocean away, so his grandparents mailed him tapes of the games.

“I had to wait for the tapes. I used to wait for the mail guy to drop them off all the time. What I looked most forward to getting was the basketball games.”

He got up super early to record games. Rewind, play, rewind. He studied Magic Johnson. He studied Michael Jordan. Every move, he copied it. “From a young age, a very young age, I devoured film.”

Then Kobe finally met his blueprint, and he did the only thing left. He asked questions. Footwork. Post moves. The fadeaway.
