Did you know that Berkeley has generated more Peace Corps volunteers than any other college or university in the country?

For some, volunteering in the Peace Corps is a chance to take what they learned in the classroom and apply it around the world, from disease prevention in Rwanda to English instruction in Ethiopia. For others, service abroad sets them on an entirely new professional path. And for more than six decades, that drive to support others has shaped individual lives and Berkeley’s identity as a powerhouse for public service.

Returned volunteers and campus leaders said that legacy reflects both the service-oriented student long drawn to Berkeley and a campus culture focused on improving the world.

“Our students are very bright, and it’s within them to want to make change,” said Sue Harbour, associate dean and executive director of Berkeley Career Engagement. “They’re not cool with the status quo of what’s going on in the world, and if they have an opportunity to do something that’s going to impact change, they’re going to do that.”

Swipe to meet some of our community who have made a difference.
