Tipping in Ontario is shrinking faster than anywhere else in the country, according to a new report.

The State of Tipping in Canada 2026, from tip management platform Actual and Angus Reid, surveyed more than 500 hospitality workers across the country. Nationally, 67 per cent said their tips have gone down over the past two years. In Ontario, that number jumps to 72 per cent.

Plenty of workers are depending on those tips too. Across Canada, 43 per cent say they need tips just to get by, and in Ontario it’s 45.7 per cent. About 41 per cent of Ontario respondents also feel customers don’t understand how much tipping matters.

One bright spot is transparency. 85.7 per cent of Ontario workers say they know how tips are divided at their workplace.
