📊 What does the U.S. withdrawal mean for Iraq?

The U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq concludes Operation Inherent Resolve, the American-led mission against ISIS that began in 2014.

The exit was agreed in 2024 under President Joe Biden and carried out under the Trump administration. Now, Iraq is taking full responsibility for its security while Washington shifts toward a bilateral defense relationship.

But Iraq is marking the moment as more than a military withdrawal. Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi declared October 1 the beginning of a “new era” and announced four public holidays to commemorate what his government calls “Independence Day.” 🇮🇶

The symbolism is significant: after years of foreign military presence, Baghdad is presenting the end of the U.S.-led mission as a new chapter in Iraqi sovereignty and security. 🌍
