October 4th is the birthday of Berta Cáceres, Indigenous Lenca leader and environmentalist. She was assassinated in 2016 for her activism and protection of the Río Gualcarque against the world's largest dam builder. Three of her assassins were linked to US-trained elite military troops - two were trained in the School of the Americas, now known as the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC). Since its foundation in 2001, WHINSEC has been linked to thousands of murders and human rights violations throughout Latin America by its graduates.

"She warned that extractive industries, backed by governments and protected by private security forces, Would continue to target Indigenous lands and waters. She was right. From Central America to the United States and beyond, the same pattern persists: projects imposed without consent, environmental defenders criminalized, and communities forced to risk everything to protect what sustains them." - @waterprotectorlegal

Berta's voice lives on through water protection movements around the world - how she organised, resisted and built collective power. Water defence is not a single campaign. It is a global struggle, inextricably intertwined with the fight for sovereignty, dignity, a livable climate, and equality.

"Our Mother Earth - militarized, fenced in, poisoned, a place where basic rights are systematically violated, demands that we take action." - Berta Cáceres, at the Goldman Environmental Prize, 2015.
