How did a working motion picture studio and a simple studio tour ultimately evolve into Universal Studios Hollywood? 🎬🌎

Jon Sheinberg, son of legendary Universal executive Sid Sheinberg, shares some of the fascinating history behind the Universal Studio Tour and the people and ideas that helped transform Universal’s working studio into one of the most recognizable entertainment destinations in the world.

The story actually begins much earlier.

Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle opened the gates of Universal City to visitors more than a century ago, giving the public an opportunity to step onto a real motion picture studio and watch movies being made.

Decades later, that idea would return in a much bigger way.

Under the leadership of Lew Wasserman and others at Universal, the modern Studio Tour began taking guests behind the scenes of the working studio. Sid Sheinberg would become another enormously important figure in Universal’s history as the company continued to grow its film, television and entertainment businesses.

What began as a way for people to experience a real Hollywood studio eventually grew beyond the tour itself. Attractions, shows and increasingly elaborate entertainment experiences were added over the years, helping shape the Universal Studios Hollywood we know today.

For me, this history is also very personal.

As a kid, walking onto a real working motion picture studio and seeing where movies and television shows were actually being made was incredible. Those experiences helped spark my own interest in television and motion pictures and ultimately influenced the career I would pursue.

Years later, I had the opportunity to spend more than a decade working on that very same property and become a small part of making the magic happen myself. It was a dream come true and an experience I will always cherish.

That connection is also one of the reasons the Cow Missing Archive exists today.

Theme parks are constantly changing. Attractions close. Sets and buildings disappear. Shows end. Technology is replaced. Even experiences that were once a major part of a park can eventually survive only through photographs, video, documents and the memories of the people who were there.

The Cow Missing Archive is about preserving that history.

Through photographs, videos, historical materials and firsthand documentation collected over many years, Cow Missing is working to preserve these stories and make them accessible to people around the world — and to future generations who may never have had the opportunity to experience them themselves.

Hearing stories like this directly from Jon Sheinberg helps connect the Universal Studios Hollywood of today with the people, decisions and ideas that helped create it.

Because theme park history deserves to be remembered.
