Cypress Creek students attempt walkout, administration steps in

HOUSTON — On Feb. 3, at approximately 12:39 p.m, several students walked out of Cypress Creek High School to protest recent events involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence across the country.

According to a Cypress Creek senior, “Administration blocked off the front doors of the building and rerouted everyone away to get them to class.”

Gaining traction from an account on Instagram, creekhswalkouts, school administration were made aware of potential safety concerns and discouraged students from any in-school participation.

“Cypress Creek does not support, endorse, or sanction any walkout or protest during school hours,” Principal Martin Drayton said in an email to families Monday afternoon. “Our primary responsibility is to provide a safe, focused learning environment for all students.”

Photos suggest around 50 or more Cypress Creek students participated in the walkout.

“It creates a significant security risk,” Drayton noted. “Staff cannot provide supervision, ensure student safety, or account for student whereabouts once they exit the building.”

According to a senior who participated in the walkout, making a statement is worth the risk, though they thank those who supported the protest from afar as well.

When asked about their sign, “My sign mean[s] that I am the voice,” they said. “For my grandparents [and] other people who can’t speak up for themselves.”

Over the announcements earlier in the day, Principal Drayton said:

“I want you to know that my number one goal is to ensure that every student on this campus is safe and secure. And please understand, if you are to leave this building, I cannot guarantee your safety and security.

[. . .] If you want to share your concerns, if I can help you use your voice so that it is effectively heard to actuate change, I will absolutely do that. I am committed to doing that.”

The Instagram account organizing the walkout has since been taken down.

The CFISD Code of Conduct states that those who leave class unauthorized may face disciplinary action including but not limited to in-school suspension/DMC.
