In 1891, Emily Jackson’s husband seized her outside Clitheroe parish church after Sunday service, forced her into a carriage and locked her in his house in Blackburn — and said the law allowed it.

A court had ordered her to return to him. She refused. His lawyers argued a husband could confine his wife by force until she gave in.

The Court of Appeal disagreed. Lord Esher said it would make a wife “the abject slave” of her husband: “I protest that there is no such law in England.” Emily was set free, and no husband could lawfully imprison his wife again.

Send this to a woman who’d have done the same.
