Former Colorado Supreme Court Justice Melissa Hart died Thursday, nearly a year after she resigned from the bench following an extended personal leave of absence.

“My wife, Melissa Hart, who was a wonderful woman, a caring wife and mother, and an amazing leader and force for good in the legal community, had been battling health issues and passed away this morning,” her husband, Kevin Traskos, said Thursday.

Hart, a 57-year-old mother of two who grew up in Denver, was appointed to the Colorado Supreme Court in 2017 by Gov. John Hickenlooper. She retired in January after taking a several-month leave of absence from the bench beginning in October 2025.
