There’s something about the Mazda CX-30 that makes you forget you’re looking at a compact SUV until you actually start thinking about how much car is packed into it. The 2026 CX-30 sits in that weird sweet spot where it’s small enough to make city driving and parking easy, but still has the proportions, ground clearance and practicality you want from an SUV. Mazda’s Kodo design gives it those sharp body lines and wide stance that make the CX-30 look surprisingly aggressive from certain angles, while the interior takes a much more understated approach. Everything is laid out around the driver without trying to turn the dashboard into a spaceship, and depending on the trim, you get features like a 10.25-inch centre display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, a power moonroof and Bose premium audio.

Then there’s the part that makes the CX-30 feel a little different from a lot of other compact SUVs: it actually likes being driven. The naturally aspirated 2.5L Skyactiv-G puts out 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, and i-Activ AWD comes standard, which is especially useful when the roads outside decide to become a mixture of snow, ice, slush and whatever else Alberta has planned for the day. If that still isn’t enough, the available 2.5L turbo brings up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel, which is a pretty ridiculous amount of power for something this size. The steering is responsive, the handling is composed, and the CX-30 has that slightly unusual Mazda quality where even a trip across town can feel more engaging than it really needs to be.

It’s also one of those vehicles that makes more sense the longer you look at it. It isn’t trying to be the biggest SUV, the fastest SUV or the most futuristic SUV. It’s just a compact, AWD, five-passenger SUV that looks good, drives well, fits into everyday life and doesn’t take up half the parking lot. And maybe that’s exactly why the CX-30 works so well.
