Drinking from an ordinary cup in orbit is surprisingly difficult because gravity no longer pulls the liquid toward the bottom. NASA developed a specially shaped cup that uses surface tension, wetting and capillary action instead. Its narrow angled channel guides the liquid along the cup's wall toward the rim, allowing an astronaut to drink normally without the coffee simply floating away. The design also became a useful experiment in how fluids move when gravity is no longer the dominant force controlling their behavior.
