## Caption

People in Australia do not see a different phase of the Moon from people elsewhere on Earth. The phase is the same worldwide because sunlight illuminates the Moon in the same geometric arrangement. What changes is the viewing angle. From the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, the illuminated portion can appear rotated or upside down compared with views from the Northern Hemisphere. Earth’s curved surface changes your orientation relative to the Moon, not the Moon’s phase. NASA explains this distinction clearly.
