Satellites watch over our planet every day. They track storms, floods, wildfires, dust and changes in the ocean and climate.

Data from space can only protect lives when national weather services can access it, understand it and turn it into forecasts and early warnings.

Here’s how WMO is helping its Members put satellite data to work:

🛰️ WMO works with space agencies to make satellite data and products available for weather, climate and hydrological services for all Members.

🛰️ Under the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative, WMO brings together information on satellite products for monitoring floods, tropical cyclones, heatwaves, droughts, fires and volcanic ash, helping national services find the right data and the training they need.

🛰️ The WMO-CGMS Virtual Laboratory (VLab) brings together Centres of Excellence and satellite operators to train forecasters around the world. Courses help forecasters interpret satellite imagery and use it in their daily work, for hazards ranging from severe storms and tropical cyclones to floods, heatwaves, wildfires, dust and volcanic ash, as well as for marine forecasting. Newer topics include processing satellite data with Python and the use of AI.

From space to the forecast desk, the WMO community helps make sure satellite observations reach the people who use them to protect lives and livelihoods.
