For a decade, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s Gamma Zeta Omega Chapter has helped bring political conversations directly to South Florida communities.

Tonight, that tradition continues.

Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and the chapter are presenting the 10th Annual Pumps, Pearls and Politics Fireside Chat at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens.

This year’s discussion features journalist Don Lemon as moderator, with Florida U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon and gubernatorial candidate David Jolly scheduled to participate.

The event begins at 5 p.m. Eastern, with a livestream available for virtual attendees.

According to the congressional announcement, the program is intended to provide residents with opportunities to hear from candidates and engage with issues affecting their communities.

Eight Divine Nine organizations are listed among the collaborating partners, alongside several South Florida civic and community organizations.

The event’s significance extends beyond its guest speakers.

Black Greek-letter organizations have long participated in voter education, public service and community leadership. Programs like this demonstrate how those networks can connect residents with elected officials and candidates outside traditional campaign settings.

The organizers describe tonight’s event as nonpartisan. The announced discussion features two candidates, and the release does not establish that every candidate in those races will participate.

BGL QUESTION: Should Divine Nine organizations expand their role in hosting candidate forums and civic conversations, particularly on college campuses?
