Experts say life on Long Island is expensive. Property taxes are among the highest in the nation, with numbers surpassing 11,000 in Nassau and 9,000 in Suffolk. 

Some who left Long Island say cheaper housing or lower taxes gave them more financial breathing room, even as family, friends and a sense of home continued to pull them back.

Coming back can be harder to afford than leaving, with high home prices and rents creating a barrier for former Long Islanders who want to return.
