“Nature is the master, and humans should make as little interference as possible.” That observation guided #AD100 Hall of Fame designer Axel Vervoordt (axelvervoordt_co) in the transformation of a nearly 10,000-square-foot chalet in the Swiss Alps, where his goal was to make the 1980s structure feel as though it had always belonged there.

Working alongside comina_architecture, Vervoordt eschewed newer materials in favor of rarer, recuperated elements with historic resonance: 18th-century Swiss wooden ceilings, 19th-century pine paneling, 16th-century granite blocks, and weathered stone rich with natural patina. In the living room, a monumental fireplace built using the unpolished backsides of 18th-century carved stones centers the room. An extraordinary collection of art further elevates the home’s atmosphere, with paintings by Kazuo Shiraga, Lucio Fontana, Lee Ufan, Chung Chang-Sup, Ida Barbarigo, and Jef Verheyen operating in dialogue with the timber and stone.
