This post was actually supposed to be a reading vlog but since there’s no clips of me reading (because I read it in bed every night for 3 days), here’s some of the thoughts I had while reading. If you can’t tell by the slides, I throughly enjoyed It’s Only Dancing by Jasmine Guillory. Kat and Jordan were so so sweet. The supporting cast added a level of humor, support and depth I’ve come to love with Guillory’s work. Camp Ochoa seemed like a great time and I’m a little jealous I never had something like that as a child. The story was really easy to read. I looked forward to bedtime just so I can see what happened next. Kat is a well done plus size teenager. The way she picked up on negative views of her body felt familiar, unfortunately, but I hope it will show readers the flaws in “I hate my body but not yours” mindsets. These things shrunk Kat but I’m glad we got to see her blossom by the end. I loved Jordan’s passion and enthusiasm. I did laugh (and yell internally) when he said the title. The instant connection that they both tried to fight was funny to watch. now that one part by the bookstore did startle me. Kat’s panic was palpable. I hate that something like that can be a reality but I think weaving social issues into stories is necessary and shows the realness of life. I can probably go on and on about things I liked about the book so I’ll just stop here. But if you (or a kid in your life) has struggled with body issues, get them this book. I think it’ll bring you joy. Thank you to Hear Our Voices and Jasmine Guillory for the ARC 💖 #hearourvoices #hov #itsonlydancing
