Oakland is the latest of a growing number of Bay Area cities to temporarily pause all data center development after the city faced backlash to a data center proposal in its downtown.

Oakland City Council members unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium Tuesday, which temporarily freezes all data center plans and developments and gives the city time to develop comprehensive data center policies. The council may also extend the moratorium.

Ahead of Tuesday’s City Council meeting, about 50 people rallied outside of the city hall, chanting “No data centers in our town!”
