Bringing Black stories to the screen means thinking about whose experiences audiences get to see. Blair Underwood joins Kelley L. Carter to reflect on portraying Jackie Robinson and choosing roles that celebrate Black life. In this preview of The Trade with Kelley L. Carter, he describes Robinson’s restraint without mistaking it for complacency, then shares how Sidney Poitier shaped his own ambitions. The conversation also touches on the escape storytelling offers and the memories attached to his son’s baseball field. After 40 years in the industry, Underwood explains why staying in the work is its own definition of success.
