Third gear, boost coming in, and my buddy stopped mid-sentence. He'd spent the whole drive explaining why he was holding out for a newer car. He didn't finish the thought.

That's the thing about the Evo IX. You don't read about it working. You feel it working. Steering that talks back, all four corners digging in, and a turbo four that sounds like it has somewhere to be. No filter between you and the machine, which is exactly why people who drive one stop shopping.

Here's the part the spec-sheet crowd skips. The IX is the last Evo with the 4G63. Iron block, 2.0 liters, and Mitsubishi finally gave it MIVEC for this generation, so the old workhorse got better manners without losing the attitude. US cars came with 286hp. GSR got the 5-speed, MR got the 6-speed. After this, the X moved to the aluminum 4B11T and the 4G63 story at Mitsubishi was over. The IX is the final chapter, written by the most developed version of the motor.

Now the honest part. 350whp is the number everyone chases, and the motor can keep up. Your wallet has to keep up too. At that level you're budgeting for fueling, a clutch that can take it, a real tune from someone who knows these cars, and maintenance you don't skip because it's inconvenient. Respect the build and it respects you back.

Meanwhile, clean examples aren't getting cheaper. While people wait for a better deal, the unmolested ones keep disappearing into garages that don't sell. That's why the move is simple. Buy it. Tune it. Box it. Run a set of wheels that fits the era, drive it like Mitsubishi meant it, and never sell it.

The last 4G63 is the one. Everybody who let one go already knows that.

Grail or nail? One word answers only.
