The Mk4 got the movie, the posters, and the auction prices. The Mk3 got there first, and the only thing keeping it cheap is a head gasket story most people repeat without ever pulling a head.

The A70 is where Supra stopped living in the Celica's shadow. It had its own platform, double wishbones at all four corners, and a 3.0L 7M inline-six up front. That's the car that turned the badge into a name worth defending.

The Mk3 cheat sheet before you buy or build one:

1. The 7M's gasket reputation is widely blamed on the factory head bolt torque spec, not a weak engine. Ask the seller what was done and with what parts, not just "has it been done?"
2. The fix is well known: head studs, a multi-layer steel gasket, and the head checked flat at a machine shop. Do it right once and stop thinking about it.
3. Go through the cooling system while you're in there. A tired radiator or a lazy fan will happily undo your fresh gasket job.
4. Budget for the "while I'm in there" list. The one-weekend head job turns into a month, a timing belt, a water pump, and a parts counter guy who now asks how your kids are doing.
5. Once it's sorted, the turbo six has plenty of power left in it. Just don't chase big numbers on a motor you haven't fixed yet.

The Mk4 is the one you hang on the wall. The Mk3 is the one you actually get to drive. Mk3 first. Change my mind.
