Marie Antoinette, Degas, Imperial Rome: one private collection, spanning millennia, holds them all.

Assembled over decades by a single, deeply committed collector, Magnum Opus brings together more than 900 works: Roman imperial marble, Old Master paintings, Islamic court carpets, royal French furniture, Impressionist masterworks and exceptional 20th century design. A pair of Louis XVI chairs attributed to Georges Jacob, moved into Queen Marie-Antoinette’s grand cabinet at the Tuileries just before her arrest. A Degas pastel of a dancer at rest, offstage. A marble torso in which Rome is becoming Rome.

On its surface, the subject is beauty. Look deeper and the same preoccupations return in every era: the human form, the dialogue between material and meaning, the enduring power of provenance.

See the collection across four floors of the Breuer, October 17–22, before it is offered across four single-owner sales in New York, beginning with the Magnum Opus Evening Auction.
