Country music has a deep, rich history that many people are only just beginning to discover. In this episode, we sit down with industry legends Alice Randall and Shannon Sanders to discuss the true Black roots of the genre and why it is time to reclaim the house we helped build. From the influence of Motown to the modern impact of Beyoncé, this conversation explores how Black genius has always been at the heart of country music.

✨ Key Highlights in This Episode ✨

🚀 Alice Randall, the first Black woman to write a number one country song, shares her incredible journey from Detroit to Nashville. Alongside Grammy-winner Shannon Sanders, she dives into the historical contributions of artists like Lil Hardin and DeFord Bailey, who were instrumental in the genre’s foundation but often left out of the history books.

🎸 The pair discusses the significance of the Cowboy Carter project and how it has given Black artists permission to define country music on their own terms. They explore the cultural shift happening in Nashville and the importance of recognizing the banjo as an instrument of African origin.

📚 This discussion also highlights the importance of documentation and community support. Whether it is through Alice’s latest book, My Black Country, or Shannon’s work at BMI, the message is clear: we must tell our own stories and celebrate our cultural monuments. Learn about upcoming projects like a new Netflix documentary and even a unique country-inspired cookbook that celebrates Black culinary traditions.
