A Rainbow Valley dairy farmer in Buckeye says roaming dogs dug into his goat pen overnight, leaving dozens of his goats dead.

Wendell Crow, owner of Crow’s Dairy, found the animals Wednesday morning, Oct. 7. He says a fresh hole had been dug under the fence line into the area where the goats were sleeping, and that he believes dogs, not coyotes, were responsible. Crow says a staff member saw dogs running off. He estimates the loss at about 30% of his herd.

The herd is made up of milk goats, and the dairy supplies its cheese to resorts and restaurants. Crow says he will pause production, likely until about November, and plans to sell existing inventory in the meantime. He has moved the remaining goats to the front of the barn to keep a closer watch and is considering an electric fence.

Crow says loose dogs are a recurring problem in the Rainbow Valley area. He says animal control told him they could not act without proof, such as photos of the dogs.

Under Arizona law, livestock owners can protect their herds from dogs that chase or attack their animals, and dog owners can face charges and penalties if their pets are responsible. No owner has been identified or charged.
