On Earth, we barely think about water. In space, every drop matters.

Aboard the International Space Station, astronauts like Chris Hadfield survive on just one gallon of water per day—a fraction of what we use on Earth.

How? By turning waste into survival.

Water is reclaimed from sweat and even urine. Towels are left to air dry so moisture can be pulled back from the air. The station even creates water by combining hydrogen with carbon dioxide from astronauts’ breath.

In space, nothing is wasted—and everything is reused.
