Kim Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week when robbers dressed as police officers entered her apartment around 3 a.m. on October 3, 2016.

They held her at gunpoint, tied her up and left her in the bathroom. They escaped with millions of dollars worth of jewelry, including a diamond ring worth around $4 million that Kanye had given her.

Meanwhile, Kanye was headlining New York’s Meadows Festival. When the news reached him during “Heartless,” he stopped the music: “I’m sorry, there’s a family emergency. I have to stop the show.”

The robbery changed how Kim lived. She stepped away from social media for three months, increased her security and stopped sharing her location in real time. Years later, she said she still couldn’t sleep comfortably without multiple security guards at home.

DNA found on the material used to tie her up helped police make arrests in January 2017. The suspects became known as the “grandpa robbers” because several were older men with lengthy criminal histories. Most of the jewelry, including the ring, was never recovered.

The case went to trial in 2025. Kim returned to Paris to testify, describing how she had feared she would be killed and never see her children again. After an apology from ringleader Aomar Aït Khedache was read in court, she told him she forgave him, but that the trauma remained.

On May 23, 2025, eight defendants were convicted and two were acquitted. Khedache received eight years, with five suspended. None returned to prison, as time already served covered their remaining prison terms.

In September 2026, Kim and her stylist Simone Harouche were each awarded the symbolic €1 they had requested in damages. They said the ruling was about accountability and recognition, nearly a decade after the robbery.
