You are most powerfully positioned to love and serve the person you once were.

The word mentor has been on my mind a lot over the last couple years.

I’ve been blessed with so many mentors who surround me. Good men and women who impact, guide and shape my life. My wife, my parents, my siblings, faithful friends and leaders.

Each day as I open the scriptures, I’m taught by mentors I have never met, but whose life experiences continue to impact, guide and shape mine.

Some of the greatest opportunities for mentorship, in my opinion, are found within the walls of our own homes as fathers and mothers to our children.

I’ve watched Jenna in conversations with our children, nurturing and caring for them in ways only she can because of her own incredible life experiences.

I’ve personally loved this recently as two of our daughters have served or are serving missions. I’ve been able to share experiences from my own mission, challenges I had to overcome, things I learned, and a perspective I simply didn’t have until I had walked that road myself.

Maybe one of the greatest opportunities in our lives truly lies in using the experiences and perspective we’ve gained to love and serve the person we once were.

Jesus Christ always shows us the perfect pattern. I especially love the mentorship I can receive through Him as I study, ponder, and try to implement what I learn from His love and life.

He descended below all things. He experienced our pains and afflictions, and because He knows according to the flesh, He knows perfectly how to succor (run to) the aid of His people. Us.

“He will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy…that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people.”
Alma 7:12

I believe some of what we go through isn’t only meant to shape us. It also prepares and equips us with eyes to see and a heart to help someone walking a road we have already traveled.

At work, church, with friends, and especially within the walls of our own homes. You are most powerfully positioned to love and serve the person you once were.
