This week I heard Elder Patrick Kearon reference the Savior’s words, “Consider the lilies of the field,” and something about the word consider stuck with me.

He taught that the underlying Greek word means to study something thoroughly, to examine it with real care.

That made me think about another word I think of often: considerate.

I’ve always thought that one of the most Christlike characteristics I’ve witnessed in others is when they are considerate. I’ve also watched the opposite behavior and its damaging effects.

Maybe becoming more considerate begins by becoming better at considering.

To consider means to slow down enough to notice. To look closely, pay attention, think deeply. To seek first to understand, then be understood.

When Jesus asks us to “consider the lilies,” there is much to consider in that invitation.

Consider how they grow. Consider who created them. Consider how carefully God cares for them.

Then consider what Christ is really teaching us:

If God cares this much for the lilies, how much more does He care for His children?

There’s a powerful lesson in that for leadership and life. To be considerate of someone, we first have to consider them.

What might they be carrying that I don’t see? What might they need? What might I not understand about their story? Maybe most importantly, who does God know they can become?

Jesus Christ constantly noticed people others overlooked. The widow. The children. The blind. The woman who touched His garment. The woman at the well. He considered them all.

God’s consideration for us doesn’t mean He removes every difficult experience. Sometimes He allows the experience because He is considering not only who we are, but who we can become.

A great reminder for me that before I speak, judge, decide, or worry, I need to consider.

Consider others. Consider my blessings. Consider His hand in my life. ALWAYS consider Him.

If our Father so carefully considers the lilies, how much more does He consider His children?

And if God is that considerate of us, how considerate should we be of one another?
