Beckham was a last minute addition to our Alaska trip after a spot opened up, but truthfully, he’s always one of the first people on my mind when an opportunity like this comes along.

Before we left, I told him, “Some dads want to go without their kids. For me, I want you by my side for all the adventures we can possibly go on together.” The same is true of each of my children, and definitely of my wife.

One of the greatest blessings of this trip wasn’t just the fishing. It was watching Beckham be surrounded by incredible men. Men of faith. Men of character. Men who love their families and love God. The kind of examples every young man needs. Young men need as many heroes close to home as they can possibly have. Thanks to these men who made Beckham feel welcome and loved. 

As we spent our days on the river, one scripture of a father speaking to his son kept coming to my mind:

“O that thou mightest be like unto this river, continually running into the fountain of all righteousness.” (1 Nephi 2:9)

This is the same counsel I would give to Beckham:

Be like that river. Continually. Consistently. With purpose. With discipline. Keep flowing toward the Fountain of all righteousness, Jesus Christ.

He is the source of strength when we’re weak, peace when life gets heavy, hope when the path isn’t clear, and love that never runs dry. He truly is the fountain of every blessing.

Beckham is as good as they come. I am so proud of him. He brings me joy. I hope he becomes a great fisherman and a fisher of men, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a faithful leader. I’m confident he will.

But beyond all of that, my greatest hope for him, through every chapter of life and every responsibility he will carry, is to be like this river and keep flowing toward Christ.
