One of the most fascinating things I learned this week in Alaska was about the life journey of salmon.

As young fish, they leave the very stream where they were born and head into the vast ocean. They may spend years swimming hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

Then something incredible happens. When it’s time, they turn back. Back home.

Scientists have discovered they were created with an incredible ability to find their way home. They navigate the open ocean using the earth’s magnetic field, then somehow find the exact river they came from. As they get closer, they recognize the unique scent of their home waters and return to nearly the exact place where their life began.

The more I learned, the more I couldn’t help but think of all the symbolism and parallels to our own lives.

We leave our heavenly home and enter the vast ocean of mortality. Life is full of waves, distractions, storms, and countless directions we can choose. Yet deep within each of us, God has placed a desire to return to Him.

He has also given every one of us the Light of Christ, a God given compass that quietly points us toward truth, goodness, hope, and ultimately back to Him.

I don’t think it’s by accident that people everywhere search for purpose, belonging, peace, and HOME. We were created with those desires because home is where we came from.

President Uchtdorf once taught that we are “pilgrims, walking toward our heavenly home.” I love that thought.

Just like those salmon fighting every current to make it home, I hope I never ignore the quiet pull of God inviting me back to Him.

Maybe that feeling you’ve had before, that longing for something more, isn’t random. When truth is heard, felt, remembered, and understood, something deep within us recognizes it, and all feels well. I believe that’s Him, our God, calling us to turn toward HOME.
