CALLING HOME

This first picture was taken on my mission in Mexico in 2000. Back then, missionaries called home just twice a year, on Christmas and Mother’s Day. Those two phone calls meant everything. Hearing the voices of the people I loved and missed most was a gift.

The second picture was taken yesterday as we talked with our missionary daughter. We’re so grateful missionaries now get to call home each week. We hear her voice, see her smile, and listen to stories of miracles, challenges, and the people she is learning to love. Those conversations give us a glimpse into the Lord’s work.

Three years ago today, my father passed away.

A few weeks after he died, something happened that I’ll never forget. I wanted to tell him something, so instinctively I picked up my phone, dialed his number, and held it to my ear, only to realize what I had just done.

That experience has stayed with me.

The Bible Dictionary teaches that when we understand our true relationship with God, “namely, that God is our Father and we are His children, then prayer becomes natural and instinctive.”

That’s the kind of relationship I want with my Heavenly Father.

When something wonderful happens, I want my first instinct to tell Him.

When I’m worried, I want my first instinct to seek Him.

When I need direction, I want my first instinct to ask Him.

When my heart is full of gratitude, I want my first instinct to thank Him.

President Jeffrey R. Holland recently taught, “However much you’ve prayed, pray more.”

Our Father in Heaven wants to hear from us. Through prayer we can reach Him anytime, anywhere, about anything.

And because of Jesus Christ, one day we won’t just hear His voice. We’ll see His face.

I pray that day will feel like the sweetest homecoming of all.

Until then, may our first call always be home.
