This week I found myself reading Luke 5:11 as sat next to a lake in the Uintas, very unsuccessful in my attempt to catch just one single fish.

“And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.”

I’ve always pictured the disciples leaving behind empty boats. But that’s not what happened.

They had just experienced the greatest catch of fish in their lives. Their boats were overflowing. Their nets were full. It wasn’t failure they walked away from. It was success.

Jesus didn’t call them when they had nothing to lose. He called them after they had everything the world would have called a win.

I don’t think the miracle was just the catch of fish. I think the greater miracle was that they chose the Giver over the gift?

To “forsake all” doesn’t necessarily mean leaving everything you own. It means placing nothing ahead of Jesus Christ. The boats no longer defined their identity, their security, or their future. Jesus Christ did.

I wonder what “boats” I’m still holding onto. Good things that quietly compete with the best thing. Comfort. Recognition. Self-reliance. Plans that I haven’t fully surrendered to Him.

The Savior isn’t simply inviting us to believe in Him. He’s inviting us to follow Him and to even walk with Him.

My desire is to have faith to choose the Giver over the gift, to let go of whatever keeps me from walking with Him, to trust that whatever I leave behind will never compare to what I find as I follow Him. I will do what he wants me to do.
