Because of the covenant

My heart and mind have been deeply focused on my covenant relationship with God. I struggle to adequately express the feelings of my heart on this topic, but more than anything I feel immense gratitude.

From Adam and Eve until our day, we have access to God through sacred covenants and priesthood ordinances. Through them, the power of the Atonement is manifest with eternal impact in our lives.

President Russell M. Nelson taught:
“Every woman and every man who makes covenants with God and keeps those covenants, and who participates worthily in priesthood ordinances, has direct access to the power of God.”

For the past 23 years I have worked with young men in our church. Each week they carry sacred priesthood responsibilities.

They prepare, bless, and pass the sacrament, the sacred emblems representing the body and blood of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Some prepare the emblems. Some carry them to the congregation so we can renew our covenant to remember Him, take His name upon us, and keep His commandments.

Then there are the priests. My son Beckham being one of them. They break the bread and bless the bread and water to the souls of all who partake.

What a sacred responsibility.

These young men stand in the Savior’s place as they carry out the ordinance He instituted.

“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it… This is my body which is given for you.”
Luke 22:19

This year’s youth theme is Walk With Me. For these young men, I see few opportunities greater than this.

Beckham helped bless the sacrament today. After church Jenna and I asked how he felt. He said he looked out at the congregation and thought,
“I get to do this for all of them.”

There was emotion in his eyes as he shared it. We are so proud of his mature approach.

They are young, but I do not despise their youth.

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers.”
1 Timothy 4:12

And because of the covenant, we draw near and truly Walk With Him.
