Wow! An impromptu medley by avalivsmusic of two very important songs that take me back to the night my father passed, and to a message of hope that can only come through the amazing grace of my Savior Jesus Christ.

Here’s the story.

After wrapping up a podcast with Ava’s parents, she sat down and played our favorite song of hers called Generations. I mentioned that it was my father’s birthday that day and that this song always hits me to the core as I think of the line, “All that I am is a combination of generations of who kept falling in love.”

She kindly asked, “What are some songs your father loved?”

That question took me back to the hospital room the night he passed. Hours after a tragic fall, with ventilators and medicine keeping him breathing, our family gathered around his bed. With deep emotion, we waited for his final breath.

In the middle of that pain, someone began to hum the hymn Families Can Be Together Forever. We all joined in. As we sang, the most peaceful spirit of hope entered the room and our hearts.

When that hymn ended, we continued with Come Thou Fount. And then, as we began to hum Amazing Grace, the line on the machine went flat. My father went home to the God who gave him life.

Sitting there listening to Ava sing, tears poured down my face as she beautifully intertwined those messages of hope.

“I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind but now, families can be together forever through Heavenly Father’s plan.”

She had no time to prepare. She simply saw an opportunity to bless and offered her gift as a gift to us.

What a blessing.

I share this because of the peace, joy, and hope these songs bring. Because of the power of testimony in moments of loss. Because of the reality of God’s plan of salvation.

I am so grateful for family. For a Father in Heaven whose plan makes separation temporary. And for a Savior whose amazing grace makes eternal joy and relationships possible.

Thank you, Ava, for blessing our lives.
