“I’m scared. But it’s my time. I can feel it.”

Kenzie shared these words with me this week as we sat together in a quiet and sacred moment in the temple.

This morning she was officially set apart and begins her 18 months of service as a full time missionary and representative of Jesus Christ.

I love her honesty. The willingness to say she feels fear or anxiety. But I love even more her courage to recognize that even with those feelings, the hour of her mission has come. She can feel it. Her desire to please God and do His will lights the fire of her faith that will carry her forward.

It made me reflect on how often in life I feel scared or inadequate, yet can also feel the call from God. Sometimes the fear comes before the call. Sometimes it comes after, as the adversary tries to creep in and make us feel small, incapable, or unworthy. The question is whether we turn away from the call because of that fear or step through the fear in faith.

It is easy to back away from things that scare us or intimidate us.

At 18, leaving your family, learning a new language, loving new people, and stepping into a completely new land is no small thing. I understand why she would feel scared. But I also know this. Few decisions in my life have brought more blessings than stepping through fear with faith, choosing to walk with the Lord, and sharing the joy of His gospel.

She feels the call. She knows the source. And this little girl of mine will bless generations as she boldly steps into this new chapter.

I feel it too, Kenz.

The hour of your mission has come. I’m so proud of your courage and faith. The best is yet to come!
