“This young woman can have anything she wants in this life.”

As I sat with Jenna’s father to ask for her hand in marriage, he shared an experience they had with their teenage daughter. In our faith we receive what is called a patriarchal blessing, a sacred, inspired blessing given through a patriarch who speaks by the Spirit to reveal God’s promises, counsel, and vision for our lives.

Immediately after Jenna’s blessing, the patriarch turned to her parents and said, “This young woman can have anything she wants in life.” He understood the depth, beauty, and divine potential God saw and expressed to Jenna that day.

Her father gave me his permission to marry her, something I am still deeply grateful for. But as I left their home, one question echoed in my heart and still does to this day: “If she can have anything she wants in this life, why me?”

What I do know is that God was in the details of bringing us together. It is by His divine design that I get to build a life with my best friend. A best friend is someone who makes your problems their own so that you don’t have to face them alone. That is who Jenna has been for me, and who I strive to be for her.

Our life has been filled with incredible opportunities, but it is far from perfect. Social media often shows highlight reels, yet those moments of joy shine brightest because of the contrast to the pain and challenges it took to get there.

Through it all, we fight for each other. Jenna once said something I will never forget: “When things are hard, instead of turning away from each other, we looked to each other and together we looked to God.”

To the young girl who could have had anything she wanted in life, thank you for choosing me. I chose you forever and a day!
