3 Lessons I Learned From a Return Missionary on My Deer Hunt This Week

I was blessed to spend a couple days in the mountains with my good friend Brock Nixon. Brock has spent much of his life in the mountains but had never hunted, so it was special to introduce him to something I love.

We didn’t find any bucks, but that didn’t matter. Being out in God’s creations with a good friend was more than enough. And the best part? Every quiet moment under a pine tree, every pause in the hike, turned into conversations about Jesus, the topic we both love most.

Brock recently returned from his mission in Ecuador, where he devoted every day to the Savior. He came home not just as a return missionary, but as a disciple fully committed to Christ.

As we talked, he shared 3 skills that helped him learn how to Hear Him:

	1.	Be Observant – Inspiration comes when we pay attention. When we keep our eyes and ears open, God points out the needs of His children.

	2.	Be Flexible – Don’t get so stuck in your plan that God can’t change it. President Nelson’s words came to mind: “Let God prevail.”

	3.	Love – Love changes the lens we see others through. Like the Good Samaritan, love makes us willing to pause, pivot, and serve.

When our hearts are full of love, we live the great commandment and God can work wonders through us.

I’m grateful for what I learned from Brock, and for the reminder to disconnect from the world, spend time in God’s creations, and let our conversations center on the Creator of it all. That’s how we truly Connect and Conquer.
