A couple weeks ago I was able to participate in a camp our church did called Camp Helaman. It’s not a typical summer outdoors camp. At Camp Helaman these young men ages 16-18 (about 60 of them in our area) come to learn and prepare for the missions they will one day serve for the Lord. 

Serving a mission right after high school is one of those pivotal events in the life of a member of our faith. Having prepared to go, but not selecting where you’ll go, our youth anxiously wait with great anticipation of where they will be assigned to labor. In Mathew 28 the Lord commands “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations..and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” For me at the age of 18 I was called to serve the people of Leon Guanajuato Mexico. I was beyond excited. 

But more than the excitement of going to Mexico for 2 years was my excitement to represent the Lord to the people of Mexico. He was the reason I was going to serve. His love for me and my love for Him. He was the reason and truly the only reason I was able to muster up enough courage at the age of 18 to leave my family for 2 years. To leave the comforts of life to serve a people I had never met in a language I had never spoke. To gather His sheep and to bring them the peace I had found in life through Him as my Shepherd. It was one of the greatest opportunities and privileges of my life. 

What a blessing to help prepare these future missionaries through camp Helaman. There were many who through their volunteer service in our church spent hours preparing for and carrying out this camp. Well over 1000 hours of combined service for these youth were rendered. Many took from their vacation time at work to help in these efforts, and time was spent away from family during the vacation days of summer. Why would so many be willing to do so much? Again it is all because of the Love we feel from and for HIM, our Savior Jesus Christ. 

On this 4th of July weekend my greatest offer of Thanks is to God and for the great blessing to live in a land where we can recognize and worship Him.
