Am I keeping my children close to me and does being close to me mean being closer to God?

This question came to my mind last week as I sat in an incredible church meeting and witnessed a beautiful interaction between a mother, a father, and their adult son who had some very obvious disabilities. They sat two rows in front of me and Jenna, and I am sure those sitting near us saw and felt something similar.

I do not know this Mother or Father, but they are very much in their latter years of life, worn out in the service of many I am sure, but especially in the service of their son. Their son I would guess about my age or older and with obvious need of watchful care. I was not even aware of them until their son stood up in the middle of the meeting and began to make some noise, causing many to look in their direction.

I watched as his elderly mother and father each held him by his arms and pulled him back down to sit comfortably between them. This continued to happen every so often and each time they would gently pull him back to be close to them and the mother would whisper in his ear. At one point I saw her lips whisper “you are doing a good job”, and I wanted to say to her, “so are you”. Each time their son sat back down the Father would gently and lovingly lay his own head on his sons shoulder while scratching his back to calm him down. I was witnessing greatness from these parents in such a simple yet sacred way. They were ministering, and I am sure for many many years have worn out their lives ministering in the Saviors way to their son who I am positive will be eternally blessed and forever grateful to his angel parents.

Witnessing this simple yet impactful scene caused me to question how I am doing in my own ministry to the children God has blessed me with, and to ask myself….

“Am I keeping my children close to me and does being close to me mean being closer to God?”
