TODAY’S DAILY SIFT: THE FEED

The attention economy is becoming more territorial.

Meta has banned TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, from advertising across Facebook and Instagram in seven countries, including the United States.

Even outside advertisers directing users toward TikTok are affected.

Consider what that means.

One of the world’s largest advertising businesses is willing to reject revenue rather than help a competitor acquire its audience.

Meanwhile, Meta is testing versions of Facebook and Instagram that open directly into immersive video feeds.

The traditional social network is becoming an algorithmically programmed entertainment system.

And the companies controlling those systems are increasingly protective of the attention they command.

What most people are missing is how this changes the creator economy.

You can have thousands or millions of followers without controlling whether those people ever see your content.

The platform owns the distribution.

The algorithm controls discovery.

And the rules can change overnight.

As AI makes content increasingly inexpensive to produce, distribution and genuine audience relationships become more valuable.

The next advantage may belong to creators who build recognizable identities, loyal communities and direct connections beyond any single platform.

Because there is an enormous difference between having followers and having an audience.

One depends on the algorithm.

The other depends on trust.
