Combat sports can be some of the most well-rounded forms of physical activity. They challenge your body while also requiring you to think, learn practical self-defense, manage stress and work alongside other people. You do not have to want to compete or become a fighter to get something out of them.

You are not just trying to get stronger or improve your endurance. You are learning techniques, remembering combinations, coordinating your movements and constantly figuring out how to improve. The physical challenge is accompanied by a mental one.

Combat sports also offer something that most other forms of exercise cannot: a practical self-defense skill.

Daniel Espinal, a second-year studying biology and a coach and treasurer for NC State’s Boxing Club, said that is one of the things people misunderstand about boxing. The people in the club are not there only for themselves.

“You’re not going to find someone aggressive in the boxing gym,” Espinal said. “You’re going to find someone who’s willing to teach you, because we were all starting at one point and we all know the difficulty it is.”

You do not have to be athletic, experienced or interested in competing. You just have to be willing to try something new.
